As a fellow online entrepreneur, I get it! Owning an online business takes a lot of work and focus to find and connect with your ideal clients. And sometimes it’s hard to slow down and truly write from the heart. You’re constantly bombarded with scrolling posts on social media and ads on the book of faces selling you one thing or another. And don’t even get me started with AI — but that’s for another blog post.
Here are my top 7 ways to slow down and write authentically:
Disconnect to Connect
How can something so easy be so difficult? When you’re hooked on the easy dopamine hits you get from scrolling, it can be hard to pull away.
But power through the withdrawal and I promise you, you’ll feel so much better and have the energy to focus on the task in front of you.
Create Your Zone
Put on headphones and block out distractions. Turn on music if you’d like, preferably songs with no words are the best to help keep the creative juices flowing. Or, if you’re like me, no music at all!
The headphones help me stay focused on my thoughts and muffle any extra noises going on around me — like if my husband is in the kitchen or my pups and kittens are playing. It helps me get in the zone.
Center Yourself
Take a deep breath and find your center - this is surprisingly helpful especially if you have a million things on your to-do list and your mind is going a mile a minute.
Take a sip of chill and relax.
Embrace the Process
When you’re ready, let your thoughts flow freely and word vomit all your thoughts on the topic - this is when you write with your heart, don’t worry about grammar or spelling or even complete sentences at that matter.
This initial brain dump allows you to capture ideas authentically.
Take a Break
You’ve earned it. Now that you’ve got your thoughts written out, time to step away, drink water, stretch, etc. This doesn’t need to be done in one sitting.
Give yourself grace, especially if this is something new to you. I’m proud of you for taking the time to dig deep and do the work.
Remember, creativity blooms when you give yourself space to recharge.
Craft Your Story
Utilize storytelling techniques to connect emotionally with your readers. Don Miller dives deep into this in his book Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen*.

He explains why each element is important to tell a compelling story that emotionally connects with your ideal clients.
As long as you have these 7 elements, you’ll be able to connect with the people you want to work with.
Main Character
Your reader is the hero of the story. Your brand is the guide who can help them achieve their goals. Know your hero inside and out. Understand how they think and speak their language.
Pain Points
Clearly articulate your hero’s challenges, and demonstrate that you understand their pains and struggles.
Process
Offer your reader a solution to their problem by providing a clear, actionable plan that demonstrates how your service can help them achieve their desired outcome. This is often featured as the "Process" or "How it Works" section on a website.
Call to Action (CTA)
Provide clear instructions to the client about their next steps and ensure the follow-through is simple and easy. The less amount of clicks your reader needs to take, the better.
Show Success
Paint a picture of what success looks like for your reader. Get inside their head and write about what goals they want to achieve.
Potential Failure
Emphasize the potential negative outcomes of inaction and illustrate how the reader may suffer if they don't opt for your services.
Transformation
Demonstrate how your service can transform your reader’s life or business, highlighting the positive changes and benefits they will experience. This is often achieved through testimonials.
Edit, Edit, and Edit Some More
Make sure the text feels right and the cadence makes sense. Give the text space to breathe. In an article written by Forces,
“Website users spend an average of 5.59 seconds looking at written content on a site. ”
This is why it is vital your website only say what is absolutely necessary. Most people skim a website looking for key details that will help solve their problems. Save the details for your marketing content. But don’t forget to add a touch of personality to your content — nobody wants to read something written by a robot in such a formal manner. And you’ll find that as you and your business evolve, so too should your message.
If you’re someone like me, you’re going to have discouraging thoughts that you’re not connecting with your people quickly enough — and it’s okay!
You’re building something grand from the ground up. This is the most important phase so you don’t want to rush the process and build a faulty foundation. Instead, learn to enjoy the process. Like Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote,
“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
So be patient with yourself. Your business is a tiny seed that will grow into a mighty oak, if given the proper care and attention. But one thing is for sure, it doesn’t happen overnight.
